Dodgy Modulation from SUR

The Society have received another flurry of complaints about Radio SUR. Society memebrs endeavoured to locate their transmission location without success. The signal was so over modulated that much of the power was in the sidebands making signal strength direction finding impossible. A quick look at the modulation using the PIR 75 Modulation meter showed a horribly over modulated signal.

Clearly limiting is not a part of their transmission chain

Compare these graphs with those of The Flea on LPFM Observer here. This is a good example of an LPFM station that is not a good neighbour. This station has continually trampled on other stations with blatant disregard for other broadcasters. Now their excsive modulation is now impacting on stations on adjacent channels.

Rogue “out of band” urban station in Mangere

There have been reports of a rogue LPFM station broadcasting on 106.5 MHz in Mangere Central. The station is identifying itself as 106.5 FM so it is not accidental.

The Complaint That Wasn’t

The Society recently received a complaint from a new member that another LPFM Station was swamping his signal. A visit by a Society member revealed a different story. The Society member reported back:

The problem is in your antenna/coax
Impedance was 24 ohms. should be 50
SWR 2.1:1. should be 1.5: max. (But better if closer to 1.1:1)
Z=10. Z should be as close to 0 as possible but certainly below 3 or 4
The coax RG58 is 6 years + old and looks a bit suspect.
the connections to the JPole appear to be perished and probably letting water into the cable..
I would remake the RF choke with 4 turns at 100 mm dia rather than the 2 turns as at present.

It has been reported that the station is now back on air. Another great result from the Society.

New station broadcasting illegally in West Auckland

There is a new LPFM station broadcasting illegally in West Auckland on 87.5MHZ. The station identifying themselves as Amped or Amp’d FM or broadcasting outside the terms of the GURL. 87.5 is not an available frequency. Society members have idrntified the signal to be coming from around Glengarry Rd.

Waiheke Radio Grand Opening

Waiheke Radio’s new studio will be officially opened on Sat 4th June with a community open day and ribbon cutting ceremony and we’d love it if you came along.

We’ve spent much of this year developing ‘The White House’ at 4 Korora Rd, formerly a one bedroom residence, into a functioning radio station.

The open day runs from 10am to 2pm with the Waiheke Local Board presiding at the official opening ceremony at 10.30am. You’re all invited to come along for tours of the station and the opportunity to record station identification clips that will be used on-air. There will also be a free sausage sizzle and live music throughout the morning. The opening and performances will also be broadcast.

We’re also inviting community groups to visit the station and discuss how they can have their services and events given free coverage. The station also plans to run a training programme for new volunteers in coming months and this is an ideal opportunity for people to come along and find out what is involved.

Waiheke Radio is Waiheke Islands community radio station that transmits on 88.3 and 107.4 under the Low Power FM GURL. LPFM was the only viable option for Waiheke after Waiheke based frequencies were snapped up in the radio spectrum frequency tender by Auckland based radio stations and now beam back to east Auckland from Ridgeview Estate on Waiheke.

Waiheke Radio has an enviable record of broadcasting around 40 hours a week of local programming.

Stay within the law

There are many lpfm transmitters advertised on places like trade me with outputs of up to 15 and 20 watts. Unless the output strength is adjustable enabling you to reduce your output from the antenna to 1watt e.r.i.p. stay clear. The lpfm bands in NZ are guard bands that is why they are positioned at the bottom and top ends of the fm band. The top set of frequencies especially are a buffer between high power broadcasters and the aviation band.
